Meet Jasmin Kechel—wife, mother
of two boys,
and founder and owner of Lemon Canary – an endearing company that specializes
in hand made soy candles, essential oils, artisan chocolate and Reiki blessed
crystals, as well as other holistic based
products. Each product is uniquely detailed to Jasmin’s signature style that
consists of the highest quality products available, organic where possible, and
an acute personal attention to detail. All made with love in her Gold Coast
studio, Lemon Canary ‘embodies love and connection between people and within ourselves.’
Tell us about your business and the catalyst for its inspiration?
I am the owner
of a boutique Candle Company named Lemon Canary. I also have a range of Organic
Teas, Chocolates, Soaps & Perfumes. I couldn’t find any candles that used
high quality essential oils so I made my own. The rest is history.
What past work history got you to this point?
I was a beauty
therapist specialising in aromatherapy and a long haul flight attendant for 13
years. I am also a yoga teacher and reiki practitioner.
Who were your mentors along the way?
My beauty
therapy teacher who had very high standards in business and ethics. My friends
Kat and Dean who operate a successful high-end boutique. I also attended lots
of seminars and talks and read a lot so I have many varied mentors.
How do you maintain your business?
I have a small
home studio and am a solo enterprise with the help of a friend on occasion. I make what I love and hope others
will love it too.
What time does a typical day start for you?
9.30am-2.30pm…and
some late nights. Fitting my business around the kids is a juggling act.
Who attends to the domestics ‘musts’ in your home? E.g. cooking,
cleaning, etc.
I’m supposed
to…[Laughs] I have a cleaner who comes once a week, she is a godsend. It allows
me to focus on my business.
What do you do when you get a window of alone time?
Read a book and
have a cup of my Organic Tea.
Do you use childcare?
My youngest attends
a few days and my older boy is at school.
What do you do for fun as a family?
Beach days with
surfing.
How do you fit your kids in with running your own business?
I’m not sure
that I do, it is a constant balancing act, day by day. Planning the week out
well helps a lot.
How do you fit in quality time with your partner?
We make sure we
have a date night once a fortnight and we enjoy meditating together each night
to relax from the day.
What is your favourite thing to do for date night?
A nice relaxing
dinner or a movie.
What are your favourite restaurants on the Gold Coast?
I love Benihana
at the Marriott. As a family, the
boys always love Montezumas. It’s colourful and has corn chips! For a girl’s
night out, I love a nice dinner at Mandala Arts Organic Café.
Where is your favourite place on the Gold Coast?
I love a nice
bush walk in the hinterland, the crisp air always brings me back to life!
Where are your go-to shops?
I love Byron and
Bangalow. So many interesting little shops.
What do you do for some ‘me time’?
I love getting
a cheeky pedicure at Ella Bache or going to a friends place for a cup of tea
and a nice long giggle.
Holy Grail parenting tip or tool?
Calm them down by
being calm.
How do you find balance between family and career?
Nobody knows
this and don’t believe anyone that says they do.
How do you stay motivated?
Go to seminars
and surround myself with people that inspire me.
What is your best beauty tip for mums?
Eat Fresh food. Sleep well.
